Commemorating Orange Shirt Day: Fosterful’s Commitment to Indigenous Children and Families

Fosterful staff sharing their tribe’s ceremonial song with entire staff on Orange Shirt Day

On September 30, Fosterful staff joined in on Orange Shirt Day, honoring the memory of children who were subject to the cruel assimilation practices of Indian boarding schools. A few of our staff shared a ceremonial song in commemoration as a way to uphold the message: Every Child Matters, reminding us that the legacy of family separation is not just history. Indigenous children are still overrepresented in foster care, and the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) is part of this same painful reality.

At Fosterful, we are committed to listening, learning, and providing culturally responsive care for Indigenous children. Our commitment doesn’t stop at awareness. Fosterful continues to seek partnerships with local tribes, Native-led organizations, and community advocates to ensure Indigenous children receive the support they deserve. We are dedicated to supporting protections like the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) to keep children connected to their families and heritage.

As we approach Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 13th, 2025, we invite you to learn the history of the land you live on, and support Native-led resources such as the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and MMIW USA. When we honor Indigenous voices and protect family connections, we create a stronger, more compassionate world for every child.
